Holycross Abbey, Thurles Holycross Abbey in a magnificent setting lies on the west bank of the River Suir 4 miles (6 km) south of Thurles. The Abbey has a distinguished history and was fully restored as part of European Architectural Heritage Year 1975. Built by Donal Mór O' Brien for the Benedictines in 1168, the abbey transferred to the Cistercians in 1182. In 1563 the abbey was made over to the Earl of Ormonde, because of the protection of the Butler family monks remained at Holycross until the seventeenth century. A particle of the True Cross was enshrined in the abbey, and Holycross became one of the most frequented places of pilgrimage in Ireland and has become a place of pilgrimage for many.
