Hurling in Tipperary
Hurling is an ancient game brought to Ireland by the Celts and believed to be over 2000 years old. Heroes of Irish folklore and players of this ancient game are remembered for their athletic prowess and skill. It is a game with similarities to hockey and is played with a small, hard leather ball and a curved wooden stick. The stick is called a hurley, in Irish a camán. The ball or sliothar is a hard leather ball with raised edges. The ball can be struck from the ground or in the air and may be picked with the hurley and carried for not more than four steps in the hand. Having completed four steps the ball can be bounced on the hurley back into the hand another four steps may be taken. It is forbidden to catch the ball more than twice. To score, players put the ball over the crossbar with the hurley to receive one point. A goal is scored by putting the ball under the crossbar and into the net to recieve three points. Hurling is a fiercely competitive game played at high speed with the ball dancing from one side of the field of play to the other. Fortunes can change quickly in this game with scores usually being high. Tipperary known as the Premier County has its own team and over 60 club teams with in the county.
