Golden is a picturesque village set on the River Suir. Golden is noted for its fishing, and the historic site of Athassel Abbey.

The abbey was founded in the late 1100s by William deBurgo. It is situated on a 4 acre site at a bend in the River Suir. At one time it was the largest active monastic site in medieval Ireland. It burned down in 1447 and was dissolved in the 1500s. A five arched bridge at the entrance remains.
