Holycross
About 4.5 miles from Thurles on the river Suir stands Holycross Abbey. The Abbey was founded in the 12th C by Donal Mor O'Brien for the Order of Tiron. Before the close of the century it was passed to the Cistercians. It takes its name from a relic of the True Cross. It became a place of pilgrimage. Additions & renovations occurred in the 15th century. The abbey fell into disrepair and after hundreds of years was reconstructed between 1971 and 1975.. The church is cruciform, has a low central tower and aisled nave. There are many interesting features. These include varied windows, a sedilia in the presbytery, mural paintings and many fine carvings.
