Killenaule
Above left an old coalmining air shaft near Killenaule, centre the former Church of Ireland now Killenaules Heritage Centre, right detail from the Heritage Centre. Killenaule (Cill Náile; Náile's Church.) a village situated among the heights of the Slievardagh hills, which contain deposits of coal. A handsome cruciform church is one of the features of this village.In 1848 the people here put up barricades to arrest the advance of a military force, led by a Captain Longmore commanding a troop of the eighth Hussars. He informed a civilian on guard that he had not come to take O'Brien, whereupon the obstructions were removed. After this incident Killenaule was known as "Killenaule of the barricades".
