Lough Derg
Lough Derg is on the river Shannon and is situated at the boundary of County Tipperary, Galway, Clare. It is 24 miles (39km) long and 0.5 to 8 miles (1-13km), wide. It is 37 sq miles (96 sq km) in area and reaches a depth of 119 feet (36m). There are numerous islands which remain uninhabited. In 1925 at its Southern end, the first modern hydro power system Ardnacrusha was built. Portumna is located at its Northern end and Killaloe and Balina are at its Southern end, by its shore at its eastern side Terryglass (1997 National Tidy Towns Winner).
