Loughmore, Templemore, Co. Tipperary

In the picturesque village of Loughmore stands the extensive remains of Loughmoe Court the home of the Purcells.

Loughmoe Court gave his title to Nicholas Purcell Barron of Loughmoe who was one of the Jacobite signatories of the Treaty of Limerick 1691.

The South end is the tower of a 15th C castle and the remainder is 17th C. There are several fireplaces remaining in the building as well as the remains of the bawn. Nearby are the ruins of a church with Purcell monuments.

The castle ( Loughmoe Court ) is on private land and one must have the permission of the landowner to enter.

To the right of the key stone in the fireplace above are carved the initials F.P.

This fireplace is situated on the first floor of the oldest section (15th C) of the building which it seems would have existed as a free standing fortified tower house. The fireplace is rich in carving.

Extensive restoration of the village is taking place, above the reconstruction of the village pump.

The village pump played a huge role in the life of rural communities. Villagers meeting at the pump would discuss all the local happenings, the price of cattle and crops, family news.
