Templemore
T emplemore derives its name from Teampall Mor meaning large church or Cathedral. Today it is the home of the National Training Centre of An Garda Siochana. The Barracks was built in 1810 to accomodate 1000 men. The Catholic church is opposite, and it has some noteworthy features - carved heads, mosaic panels and stained glass windows. Kiely's shop in Church street was the home of Joseph Kevin Bracken one of the founding members of the G.A.A. His son Brendan (1901 to 1957) was Churchills Minister of Information in the British Cabinet. The town has a remarkably wide Main street and in its centre stands the Market House and Town Hall built in 1826 and rebuilt after a fire in 1927. The town park was a former Carden Demesne. It has a moated grave yard with an ancient church ruin. Sir John Carden is buried there. Beyond the lake is an O'Meagher - Butler castle. This was remodelled as a Carden House until it was destroyed by fire in the mid 1700's.
